What Causes Yellow Stains in My Toilet?

If you have yellow stains in your toilet bowl, then you’ve probably also noticed them in other parts of your home. They can show up in your sink, shower, tub and even on your clothing. The reason for this is the water in your home contains high concentrations of contaminants, which leave these blemishes.

Yellow stains frequently occur in your toilet because of how the water interacts with the porcelain. As the water flows out of the bowl when you flush it, the minerals it contains slowly etch away at the porcelain’s sheen. This creates small holes where the contaminants start to accumulate and turn the bowl yellow.

The two most common impurities that cause yellow stains are hard water minerals and tannins. At Angel Water, we’ve served many homeowners in Chicago, IL, and West Palm Beach, FL, with these problems.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these contaminants and how they cause yellow water stains.

Hard Water Minerals (Calcium and Magnesium)

Hard water is one of the biggest water problems for households in the United States. Over 85% of people in this country get hard water from their taps.

Water becomes hard when it collects calcium and magnesium minerals as it flows through limestone formations within the earth. Such formations are very common in regions like Northern Illinois and Southeast Florida. For this reason, the water is particularly hard in these areas.

Hard water often leaves these minerals behind in toilets, sinks, showers, dishwashers and laundry machines. As a result, yellow hard water stains form over time if not treated. Hard water stains can also appear brownred or orange, depending on the minerals they contain.

Tannins in Well Water

Another type of organic material that sometimes finds its way into water is tannins. Tannins form as a by-product of decaying vegetation and typically contaminate private well water. As a result, the water has a faint yellow tint to it and leaves yellow water stains on toilets, sinks and clothes.

Are Yellow Toilet Bowl Stains Harmful?

These stains look alarming, but the contaminants that cause them are completely safe to consume. Drinking hard water or water contaminated by tannins poses no health risks to your body. However, that doesn’t mean the water isn’t harmful.

Hard water causes many irritating and expensive problems in and around the home, including:

On the other hand, tannins are mainly an aesthetic problem. You may find they give your water a yellowish color and an unpleasant odor and taste.

How to Remove Yellow Stains from the Bottom of Your Toilet Bowl

If you search the web for “how to remove yellow water stains in a toilet bowl,” you will find many posts recommending DIY cleaning remedies. A lot of these methods are quick and easy ways to make your porcelain look good as new. We have listed a few of our favorite DIY cleaning methods below.

However, the problem with these cleaning methods is they don’t get to the root of the problem, which is your water. If you clean the stains but don’t fix your water, then the stains will just keep coming back again. For this reason, we’ve also included some instructions below for how to fix your water and keep those stains from returning.

We recommend performing the following steps to make your yellow toilet bowl stains a thing of the past!

Step 1: Scrub Away the Stains

Cleaning the stains in your toilet bowl, sink, tub or shower requires a few common household items:

  • A nylon sponge or toilet brush
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda or borax

Once you have these items, start by removing the water from your toilet bowl. Then cover the stained areas with baking soda or borax. Add 1-2 cups of white vinegar to the bowl and leave it in the toilet for 20-30 minutes. After this, gently scrub the walls of the toilet with the brush or sponge and rinse the white vinegar and baking soda away with water.

This cleaning method should take care of your stains. However, if the blemishes persist, you may need to repeat the process or try it with another cleaning agent. Other liquids you can try cleaning with include lemon juice and salt, whitening toothpaste or Coca-Cola (yes, really).

Step 2: Have Your Water Tested

Once you’ve cleaned all the stains, it’s time to turn your attention to your water. You need to figure out whether hard water or tannins are causing the stains because that will determine which water treatment solution you should pursue.

At Angel Water, we perform EPA-certified home water tests for our customers all the time. The test is simple. We come to your home, take a sample of your water and can tell you what’s in it within minutes.

Step 3: Get an NSF 44 Certified Water Softener for Hard Water

If the test reveals you have hard water, then your best course of action will be to get a salt-based water softener. These machines remove calcium and magnesium minerals from water using a process known as ion exchange. The water throughout your home will no longer leave yellow stains as a result.

However, not all water softeners are created equal. As we mentioned above, you need to make sure you choose a salt-based water softener instead of a salt-free system. This is because salt-free systems don’t eliminate the calcium and magnesium minerals that cause yellow stains. They only condition the water so that it won’t clog your plumbing system. Only a salt-based system will remove these minerals.

You should also look for a water softener that has NSF 44 certification. A softener with this type of certification has gone through extensive testing to prove its effectiveness.

Step 4: Get a Chlorine Injection System to Remove Tannins

Your test may also reveal that tannins are the culprit. In this case, a chlorine injection system will be your best option for removing them.

Chlorine injection systems use chlorine to neutralize many different contaminants, including tannins, in water. The best systems also include a carbon filter, which removes the chlorine before sending the purified water throughout your home.

Step 5: Have Your System Professionally Installed and Maintained

Whether you get a water softener or a chlorine injection system, a licensed plumber should install the equipment. This is the best way to guarantee your system will work as it should. Beyond this, you must also have your system serviced at least once a year to keep it working properly and maintain your warranty coverage.
