Haloacetic Acids

One group of contaminants frequently found in Crystal Lake drinking water is haloacetic acids. This collection of five acids often form as a byproduct of the water disinfection process. The health risks of consuming too many of these acids include cancer and developmental disorders.

Recent studies indicate that Crystal Lake water contains 7.57 ppb of Haloacetic Acids. While this total does not exceed the legal limit of 60 ppb, it is 76x higher than the EWG recommended health guideline of 0.1 ppb.

Here are the totals for each of the acids:

  • Dibromoacetic acid – 1.97 ppb (49x higher than the EWG limit of 0.04 ppb)
  • Dichloroacetic acid – 2.77 ppb (14x higher than the EWG limit of 0.2 ppb)
  • Monobromoacetic acid – 0.0459 ppb (below the EWG limit of 25 ppb)
  • Monochloroacetic acid – 0.0715 ppb (below the EWG limit of 53 ppb)
  • Trichloroacetic acid – 2.72 ppb (27x higher than the EWG limit of 0.1 ppb)

Radium-226 and -228

The radioactive isotopes radium-226 and -228 are both naturally occurring and caused by human activities like oil extraction. The health risks of consuming too much radium include cancer, blood disorders and birth defects.

EWG indicates that the drinking water in Crystal Lake contains 0.68 pCi/L of radium-226 and -228. This exceeds their health guideline of 0.05 pCi/L, but it is beneath the legal limit of 5pCi/L.

Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs)

The TTHMs are a collection of four contaminants that form as byproducts of water disinfection. These harmful pollutants can cause cancer, heart defects, birth defects and damage to neural tubes.

In 2017, the Crystal Lake utility reported 37.5 ppb TTHMs in the drinking water. Even though this is under the legal limit of 80 ppb, it is far above the recommended health guideline of 0.15 ppb.

  • Bromodichloromethane – 10.5 ppb (176x higher than the EWG limit of 0.06 ppb)
  • Bromoform – 4.20 ppb (8.4x higher than the EWG limit of 0.5 ppb)
  • Chloroform – 13.2 ppb (33x higher than the EWG limit of 0.4 ppb)
  • Dibromochloromethane – 9.48 ppb (95x higher than the EWG limit of 0.1 ppb)
